Self-Compassion: Cutting Yourself Some Slack

Maybe it's time to cut yourself some slack.

It's a fact of life: we all go through challenging times.
And, it's a fact of our time: we are going through extraordinary times (certainly you don't need yet-another framing of them).

Yet many of us are still holding ourselves to standards baked in another decade:  Zero inboxing.  GTD.  Biohacking our sleep scores.

Measuring ourselves on so many old markers - - and when we find ourselves "lacking", beating ourselves up.

Maybe it’s time you met that internal benchmark of “perfection” with self compassion.

Self-Compassion is the kindness and grace we extend to ourselves

When we inevitably struggle how we respond can have a significant impact on our well-being.  Meeting those struggles with self-compassion makes a world of difference:

According to Kristin Neff, the world's leading researcher on self-compassion, it has three parts:

  • Self-kindness (instead of self-criticism)

  • Mindfulness (instead of over-or-under reacting)

  • Common humanity (instead of isolating and telling yourself it's just you)

You're not alone in your struggling, you are allowed to have a human experience, and everyone deserves kindness and support in the face of their very human experience.

Self Compassion is a process

Self-compassion is ongoing, just like coping or self care. It's an emergent practice that can grow as you evolve your self-awareness, self-talk, and your personal experience.
